We
need your help!
Programs are in the works
to remove invasive, pest plants from the valley and upland trails,
construct a wetlands area to improve filtration of storm water entering
the cave system and design a nature center and exhibit area to better
educate and serve visitors to the historic eco-tourism site! Over
the next several years, Lost River will grow and develop into an
even more amazing urban green space thanks to helpful donations
of time, energy and funding from engaged individuals.

Opportunities
Sixth
Annual Invasive Plant Pull
April 18, 2009
1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Individuals and groups
are welcome to sign up to lend a hand that day. Our goal every year
is to clear sections of the valley floor, allowing sun and water
to reach dormant native ferns and wildflowers. It really is to bring
back our native look to the valley.
Volunteers are welcome
to bring hand tools such as rakes and clippers, but chain saws are
not needed. Tools will be provided for those without their own.
It’s recommend that volunteers wear long-sleeved shirts and
long pants for safety.
Once volunteers are ready
to work, park staff will guide them on what to cut - and what to
leave. There are also incentives for those who pre-register, including
T-shirts, free boat tours, door prizes and gift shop discounts.
Groups wishing to volunteer
at Lost River but can’t make it to the April 18 event may
call to schedule another time.

A big thanks to the Harder family! They are a local family who volunteers for the Friends of the Lost River in their free time. You can too! Call us at 270-393-0077!

On June 9, 2008,
Cub Scout Pack 297, from Scottsville, Kentucky, planted native prairie
wildflowers and grasses at Lost River Cave & Valley. These plants
will restore the land so that it is reminiscent of the pre-settlement
prairie landscape.
